Ask any experienced fencing contractor what causes most fences to fail, and you’ll probably expect the answer to be storms.

Strong winds certainly finish plenty of fences off.

But they’re rarely the real cause.

More often than not, the problems started years earlier, hidden below ground or built into the installation itself. By the time a fence panel falls into the neighbour’s garden, the damage has already been developing for months, sometimes years.

The frustrating part is that many of these problems are completely avoidable.

The Biggest Mistake Happens Underground

Everyone notices the panels.

Very few people think about the posts.

That’s understandable because once the fence is finished, all the important work disappears below ground.

Yet that’s where the lifespan of the fence is really decided.

It stays looking smart, doesn’t rot and requires very little maintenance compared with timber.

In fact, accuracy becomes even more critical.

Composite expands and contracts differently depending on temperature. Ignore manufacturer spacing recommendations and you’ll often see boards bowing or joints opening unexpectedly.

I’ve seen expensive composite fencing installations spoiled because somebody treated the system like traditional timber fencing.

It isn’t.

The composite fencing cost also means mistakes become far more expensive to correct later.

Wind Exposure Is Often Overlooked

A fence in a sheltered suburban garden experiences completely different conditions to one overlooking open fields.

Yet many installations are built exactly the same.

Strong prevailing winds place enormous pressure on long fence runs.

Sometimes heavier posts solve the problem.

Sometimes additional bracing helps.

Sometimes changing the fence style altogether makes more sense.

Horizontal slatted fencing, for example, can behave very differently from featheredge fencing during strong gusts.

There isn’t a universal solution.

Rushing The Job Never Pays

Collapsed drains.

Large sandstone rocks.

Trying to rush through those situations usually creates problems later.

Small Warning Signs Shouldn’t Be Ignored

The signs usually appear gradually.

Watch out for:

  • Panels beginning to bow.

There’s nothing wrong with comparing prices.

But fencing isn’t just about the visible materials.

You’re paying for groundwork, experience and installation quality as much as timber and concrete.

Poor drainage.

Weak fixings.

Minimal concrete.

Everything looked fine on completion day.

Three years later, it wasn’t such a bargain.
